A1. They target the same enzyme (tyrosinase) but through different biochemical routes, making the combination more effective than either alone. Beta-Arbutin is a glycosylated form of hydroquinone — it is slowly hydrolysed in skin to release small amounts of hydroquinone at the enzyme site, providing controlled tyrosinase inhibition without the concentration-dependent irritation of direct HQ use. Kojic Acid chelates the copper ion at the active site of tyrosinase, preventing the enzyme from catalysing the oxidation of L-tyrosine to melanin. Using both simultaneously provides substrate competition (arbutin) and enzyme blocking (kojic acid) at once, addressing melanin synthesis from two angles.
