FAQs
Q1. How does CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream help with keratosis pilaris (KP)?
A1. Keratosis pilaris is caused by keratin buildup inside hair follicles, creating hard plugs that produce the characteristic rough bumps most visible on the upper arms, thighs, and buttocks. CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream addresses this through Salicylic Acid (a BHA that dissolves the keratin plugs inside the follicle), Urea (a keratolytic that weakens the bonds holding dead skin cells together, softening and gradually clearing the plugs), and Lactic Acid (an AHA that exfoliates the surface layer). These three mechanisms together provide significantly better KP clearance than most single-active KP treatments.
Q2. What does Urea in CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream do for rough and dry skin?
A2. Urea is one of dermatology's most underrated actives — a naturally occurring molecule in healthy skin that acts as both a humectant (attracting moisture) and a keratolytic (breaking down excess keratin). At the concentrations in CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream (typically 10%), Urea significantly improves very dry, rough, or scaly skin by dissolving the abnormal keratin accumulation on the surface and within follicles, and retaining moisture in the spaces between skin cells. It is particularly effective for the rough, flaky skin commonly seen in older adults, diabetic dry skin, and eczema-associated thickening.
Q3. Can CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream be used on the face?
A3. It is primarily formulated for body use on rough or bumpy areas — arms, legs, elbows, and knees. Using it on the face is not recommended without dermatological guidance because the combination of Salicylic Acid, Urea, and Lactic Acid in a leave-on cream may be too intense for facial skin, particularly sensitive or dry facial skin. For rough facial texture, the CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum or CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser are better-suited options.
Q4. How often should CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream be applied for best results on KP?
A4. Apply once or twice daily to affected areas. Most users see a noticeable reduction in bump texture within 2–4 weeks of consistent daily use. For severe KP, applying after a warm shower (when skin is slightly softened) and gently buffing with a washcloth before application can improve penetration and results. Do not apply to broken, irritated, or inflamed skin.
Q5. Does CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream contain fragrance — is it suitable for sensitive body skin?
A5. It is fragrance-free and formulated with ceramides (NP and AP) to support the skin barrier while exfoliating. Shea Butter and Cetyl Alcohol provide emollient comfort to offset the drying potential of the exfoliating actives. This makes it gentler than urea-only creams or pure Salicylic Acid treatments, and appropriate for sensitive body skin that still needs keratolytic action.
